In 2012 the FDA approved a silicone gel implant which is semisolid. The implants are filled with cohesive gel, made of cross-linked molecules of silicone which make them firmer and thicker than the traditional implant. This implant has been used in Europe for years. It is a 5th generation implant. This form stable breast implant was found to have a lower rupture rate, less capsular contraction, and found to maintain its shape over time.
